it would definitely help. Direct 3D HAL just doesn't work and I've tried numerous things, including deleting the current graphics card driver (which definitely does cause an issue with at least one older game) and some dgVoodoo wrapper. RGB obviously works but considering it runs the game at around half a frame per second, it is useless (especially because it doesn't register mouse clicks most of the time).
